The Portage County Building Inspection Department is charged with the responsibility of issuing building permits for the following:

• New Construction, additions and alterations - including electrical and mechanical
• In-ground swimming pools (requires an electrical permit)
• Porches, decks, gazebos and accessory buildings

The Building Department does not issue residential permits for “ACCESSORY” buildings or structures on “VACANT” parcels of land. There must be an existing residential dwelling on the same parcel to qualify as “accessory”. This includes barns, garages, sheds, or any other type of accessory structure or building.
Exception:  Accessory buildings 200 sq ft or less in size.

Exemption:  Agricultural buildings are exempt from plan review and inspections.  To meet this exemption, a Zoning Certificate shall be obtained from the local Township or Village.  The Building Department will issue a green card to be posted on the job site.
